US Census Misspellings

There is an old expression that goes: "Nothing is foolproof, 'cause fools are so ingenuous." This is not to say that census enumerators and indexers fall into that category. Far from it. However, honest mistakes are often made. For instance, in the case of the Titus census records, it was common for indexers to mistake the capital T for a capital F. Thus, Titus ended up being interpreted as Fitus. Other errors simply involved misspellings by the enumerators. I have tried to include a few of them here, with spellings of Tytus and Titis. The point is, if you cannot find the family you are looking for in the records, a search for spelling variations may help. Good luck!!
